Just wanted to let everyone know we have defined hours for this get-together. We will start at 2pm and go until 6pm. Fuller Park is located on 29th, between Franklin and Williams. We will be dragging out our grills, so please feel free to bring stuff to throw on there if you wish. Also, there is a nice grassy lawn right outside of the actual off leash area, so you are welcome to bring chairs, coolers, water, beverages… If you have any questions about this event, please feel free to email us at dogfriendlydenver@gmail.com. Thank you very much! Look forward to meeting everyone!

Panzano, located in the pet-friendly Hotel Monaco in downtown Denver, likes to say that their “happy hour is going to the dogs.” You and Fido don’t have to be staying at the hotel to join Sunday happy hour from 2:30-6 p.m., beginning August 9 and continuing through the rest of the summer. Relax on the patio, where dogs get complimentary doggie snacks (think house-made Peanut Butter Pupcakes) and a bowl of cold water. Humans enjoy $3 and $4 happy hour food specials, $3 draft beer, $4 wines by the glass, and $5 specialty cocktails. 909 17th St. (at Champa), Denver; 303-296-3525.

Ludo and Rocky would like to announce one of their favorite places to take Steph and Eryn to eat.  To all of you familiar with Steve’s Snappin’ Dogs on Colfax, you can vouch for this post.  For those of you who are looking for a great hot dog or burger in Denver, this is the place to go.

Steve’s Snappin Dogs is a magical dining experience that’s mmm … good!
It’s a place where everyone is welcome!
You will crave to share with your kids, family and friends,
Steve’s premium product, superior guest service, and the fun of re-living childhood memories then and now!’
Steve’s Snappin Dogs are “Snap Happy”, and You will be too!

Conveniently located on Colfax between Monroe and Madison, Steve’s has a menu that will take you out to the ball game.  They even have veggie dogs and burgers for those of us who prefer a meatless diet.  The patio has “doggie hooks” for our best friends, and while we were enjoying our chow, we noticed many people walking to Jazz in the Park at City Park.  (Another dog friendly function)

Check out Steve’s menu and hours at http://www.stevessnappindogs.com/ and let us know how much you and your best friends love it too!

Dog Friendly Denver is excited to announce our first event! On Saturday, August 15, single people and their pooches will converge on the dog park at 29th & Franklin, at 2pm for a great time! Event will run from 2pm until around sunset? Everyone is encouraged to bring lots of water (for peeps and their dogs), coolers (as there are bbq grills around the park) and beverages. Since we are not sure about the legality of adult beverages on the premises, please keep it under wraps (in a non-glass container or if you’re ghetto, a brown paper bag should do!) We are really looking forward to getting to know all the fun, hip singles in Denver and their fabulous canines. Here is a little more info on the park itself:

The Fuller Park dogpark is very well supported by both the city and the neighborhood. It’s about 1 acre in size, and children must be over 12 to be in the dog enclosure. Small dogs and large dogs all play together happily. Evenings and weekends are very busy, while it’s quieter during the day.

The double gate entrance area helps keep dogs from getting loose, and offers a chance for the dogs to sniff each other before the second gate opens.

The only downside to the park is that there is no water fountain in the dog area, so bring your own water, and bring extra poop bags to help keep the containers full.

The Denver Dog Offleash hotline is (303) 964-1006 if you have any questions, or if you are looking for the other Denver offleash sites.

From Dog Training 101:

When a dog has a storm phobia or thunder fright, it is important that dog owners understand what does and does not work when it comes to helping the dog overcome this fear.

Ways to Help a Dog Overcome Fear of Thunderstorms

In addition to not reinforcing the dog’s fear in any way, there are a few things that dog owners can try that may help the dog overcome its irrational fears about storms.

1. Provide a safe comfortable place for the dog to go and hide. This may be a special blanket behind a chair, a cozy closet or a dog crate. Whatever it is, this needs to be a place that the dog can go to and feel safe, so never use this place for punishment.

2. Associate good things with storms. When a storm comes, get a special toy or treat out and distract the dog from the storm. It is important not to simply give the dog a treat when it becomes fearful as this will reinforce the fact that the storm is scary. Instead, distract the dog and provide treats only when the dog relaxes for a moment.

3. Speak to the veterinarian. It is important that dog owners rule out any type of physical problem that may be caused by the storm. Perhaps the dog has arthritis that always hurts when a storm moves in, causing the dog to fear the storm because it causes pain. If everything is ruled out, the vet will also be able to provide some guidance as to medications that may help the dog relax during a storm.

Desensitizing the dog to the storm does not often work well as it is very difficult to slowly build up and mimic the exact conditions of a storm. Additionally, it is vital for dog owners to keep a watchful eye on their pet as dogs can hear the storm coming from much further away than humans can, so the dog may start acting fearful long before the first rumble of thunder is heard.

We have decided that our first meet up will be at the dog park on 29th & Franklin 80205 in August. Whos in?! Email dogfriendlydenver@gmail.com to be put on the list!

Pasquini's on Broadway

Pasquini's on Broadway

We had a design meeting last night for Truth & Rights, a non-profit/ publication that I do work for (do yourself a favor and check it out, Denverites!). Originally the plan was to meet at the Open Tap (a VERY dog friendly establishment), but once we arrived, we found that the loud band outside was not conducive to conversation, therefore we decided to move down the street a bit. Pasquini’s is an incredibly delicious pizzeria/pasta joint with three locations in Denver. This particular evening, we were at the Broadway location in Englewood (1310 South Broadway @Louisiana). This spot recently added on a spectacular patio on the Louisiana side, but since it was such a gorgeous night, the patio was ultimately full. There are few tables on the old Broadway entrance, and the staff suggested we sit out front with the Rockster. Everyone was incredibly nice, coming out to pet the pooch, and even bringing him a few slices of salami! Boy, was someone excited… We managed to have a very engaging conversation about our next Volume and Symposium, and chowed down on some delicious food. I had a calzone that was litterly the size of a small country. Needless to say, I could only finish about a 1/4 of it. Nicholas had a sausage sandwhich that looked pretty tasty, while Dan had a chicken pesto foccacia and Tim had the stuffed shells. It was all amazing, and I have to thank the staff at Pasquini’s for being so sweet to my dog. I have a feeling it’s not necessarily a place to frequent with your pup, but if it happens to be a quiet night with empty tables out front, I say treat your pooch to a couple slices of salami at Pasquini’s!
